Who here has mixed with mash and sung walking the plank? A well known notion from the days of old when piracy was on high seas. They have that reputation among pirates from the sea in which they are a child. For the sailors that did not follow their pirate captain, they were threatened to be killed in a very scary way by walking off of the plank. When it came time to be thrown overboard, they would have no choice but to walk off the end of a long board (known as a plank) and plunge into the deep dark water below.
Pirates used the plank for a lot of things that were very important. Planks were carried on ships in order to facilitate battles by pirates boarding other vessels or for patching holes their own ship. They would expand their ship with planks and more boards. Its most infamous use, however, was born among the ranks of sailors who misbehaved. The flagship used the trial as a way to make an example of what would happen when somebody seriously disobeyed him.
Sailors would have been absolutely quaking to walk the plank. Can you imagine how they were feeling as they walked across the ship deck with every other pirate staring at them from behind? The other pirates would be looking on, ready to see what unfolded. The sailors knew what was coming and that it could be deadly in the English Channel. And so they had to keep walking until at last they found themselves standing on the edge of that plank with nowhere else left to go but down.
The final step of the plank contained an initial certainty that was impossible to reverse. Now it was time for them to jump into the water down. There was no escaping that it rhymed they heard, but the water ran motionlessly black - if something lay under there, unseen. It could have contained all sorts of dangerous beasts or perhaps even only the unknown. Although they knew that it might be dangerous and scary, the sailor had to make a bold move.
We never want to walk the plank ourselves, but thinking about doing so is fascinating. The days of pirates are long gone, but something we can learn from. They reveal the consequences of defying orders and what real courage looks like in times of adversity.
In the event you do need to walk a plank in your own life, these are some of my recommended things to consider. Start by taking a big breath, and calming yourself. Feeling anxious can really make you feel like it is ten times as bad than what reality has set out. Second, with eyes straight ahead and feet firm. If you fall off the plank, a sailor will certainly not sally; When all is said and done, remind yourself that you can get it done. All you need is a tad of determination and courage to face the challenge in front.
