New Standard for Hot-Rolled H-Section Steel to Take Effect on May 1

Jul 01, 2025

On October 26, 2024, the National Market Supervision and Administration Bureau of China and the National Standardization Administration approved and published the national standard GB/T 11263-2024 “Hot-Rolled H-Section Steel and Split T-Section Steel” through the “Announcement of National Standards of the People's Republic of China (No. 24 of 2024),” which will take effect on May 1, 2025.

The main revisions to this standard include: changes to classification and codes; changes to the grading of height, width, thickness, center deviation, and allowable deviation for flange bending; addition of allowable deviation for web waviness; changes to weight allowable deviation; addition of a method for customizing H-beam specifications; and addition of formulas for calculating the cross-sectional area, theoretical weight, and cross-sectional properties of H-beams.

In this revision, while core indicators such as weight deviations have been tightened, the focus has been on optimizing specifications and models. The maximum specifications have been expanded to H1700×550 mm, with the number of H-shaped steel models increasing by approximately 150% and the number of specifications increasing by approximately 230%. Among these, there are 24 models and 141 specifications of extra-large H-shaped steel with heights exceeding 1000 mm and widths exceeding 300 mm, which are widely used in bridge construction. The revised standard has reached international advanced levels.

The revision of this standard has optimized the H-shaped steel specification series, filled the gap in ultra-large-sized H-shaped steel both domestically and internationally, and better meets the needs of steel structure construction. The implementation of the standard will facilitate the expansion of the application proportion of hot-rolled H-shaped steel in steel structures, promote the internationalization of H-shaped steel products, provide more scientific and reasonable material selection criteria for the design and manufacturing of domestic steel structures, and create conditions for advancing industrial structure adjustment and optimization.
